Truthful Report on All ISKCON Temples of the World

Introduction

This website has the purpose of informing its readers about the standards being followed in each of all ISKCON temples that exist all over the world.

If you have any relevant information about a temple, please leave a comment and it’ll be added to this list. The author of this list obviously cannot visit all ISKCON temples in the world, so please take some moments to leave a comment about your local temple and/or other temples you have already visited. This way, the list will gradually become more complete.

If you have a contribution

If you wish to remain anonymous, you can use the text box below to send your contribution:

If you have a question

People are asking me questions. If you asked a question but didn’t provide an email as well, then I’ll answer your question in the comments and you won’t be warned about it.

Another option is to leave a comment to this post and then I can publicly answer your question. The form above is primarily for people who want to remain anonymous for some reason.

You can’t directly edit the table in a Wiki-like fashion, you have to use the form above and then I’ll paint the table.

If you have a suggestion about the table items

Any suggestions about the list items are also welcome. Bear in mind that for brevity’s sake we’ll include only items that:

a) Are very easy to measure ( either it’s happening or it’s not happening );

b) There’s a real possibility that someone will break religious principles from visiting a temple that has a red flag on that item.

For instance: Devotees shouldn’t eat karmi food, or participate in false kirtans designed for sense gratification, or see women who are not properly dressed, or stay in a temple room where Deity offenses are clearly happening. All these things are against religious principles. It’s also against such principles to associate very closely with women, and that could happen if they’re regularly giving class inside a temple or if they’re in leadership positions in the temple board.

If red flag for an item means that it’s simply something you don’t like or don’t agree with, then it won’t make it to this list. Red flag means that the temple environment is driving you to do things that you actually shouldn’t be doing.

Please share

Please share this list wherever you can ( Facebook, etc. ). The more people see it, the more complete it will be.

Table items

A box checked with a * sign means we’re not very sure about its flag color.

PR: Prasadam

  • GRAY:
    No information available.
  • RED: Devotees are regularly taking food cooked by non-devotees out of lust for sense gratification and/or giving food cooked by non-devotees to people in temple festivals. Here by “non-devotee” we mean someone who’s not chanting at least 16 rounds a day and not following 4 regulative principles: simply to be “vegetarian” isn’t enough. Temples in which food is being distributed outside the temple without kirtan and krsna-katha also fit into this category.A temple may respect the standards inside its properties, but if it’s encouraging and/or supporting mundane welfare activities outside the temple, such as feeding school children with midday meals, it will be red-flagged.
  • YELLOW: Non-devotees aren’t allowed to cook, but the proper rules and regulations to avoid contamination may or may not be strictly followed. Temples in which everything seems OK but forbidden foods are allowed ( such as chocolate and tea ) also fit into this category.
  • GREEN: Only devotees can cook in the temple and all rules and regulations are being nicely followed.

KT: Kirtan

  • GRAY:
    No information available.
  • RED: Kirtaniyas try to please the public instead of pleasing Krsna; the whole thing looks like a performance instead of a form of worship. Non-traditional instruments are used quite freely ( Traditional instruments being kartals, mrdanga and maybe harmonium ).
  • YELLOW: Kirtans have an overall devotional mood. Non-traditional instruments may be used inside the temple but not during day to day arati programs. Kirtans in which people chant mantras that were not given by our previous acaryas also fit into this category.
  • GREEN: Kirtans have a pure devotional mood and only traditional instruments are used inside the temple. Non-traditional instruments are allowed only in programs outside the temple ( that is, if they’re ever used ).

C: dress Code

  • GRAY:
    No information available.
  • RED: Chastity in dress is not enforced and guests ( and sometimes devotees ) may enter the temple in whatever kind of clothing they like. This means that it’s not forbidden for women to visit the temple while dressed in ( even subtly ) “provocative” clothes.
  • YELLOW: Chastity in dress is enforced even for people who are guests. However, congregational devotees think “it’s not a big deal” whether or not you wear devotee clothes while performing devotional service in the temple.
  • GREEN: Chastity in dress is recommended even for people who are visitors. Congregational devotees are aware of the importance of wearing devotee clothes while engaged in temple activities.

WL: Women Leading temple programs

  • GRAY:
    No information available.
  • RED:Women can give class to men and lead kirtan in front of brahmacaris.
  • YELLOW:Women can give class to men and lead kirtan in front of brahmacaris, but that’s a rare event.
  • GREEN: Women aren’t allowed to give classes to men, and they also can’t lead kirtans while brahmacaris be present.

FM: Free mixing

  • GRAY:
    No information available.
  • RED: Unmarried couples may be hugging each other in front of the Deities, brahmacaris may be mixing with girls, people may not be sitting on separate sides, and this sort of thing. There may be little to no restrictions on free mixing whatsoever.
  • YELLOW: Free mixing may be happening to some extent but overall a respectful and chaste atmosphere is kept inside the temple.
  • GREEN: Men and women usually don’t even talk to each other. Free mixing is not happening at all.

F: Feminism

  • GRAY:
    No information available.
  • RED: Temple president may be female and/or there’s a strong presence of women in the temple board. AND/OR “She can be guru” propaganda is going on, and temple leaders are preaching that women shouldn’t necessarily follow traditional gender roles ( i.e. taking care of husband, home and children instead of pursuing a career ). There’s no preaching that women should marry and become mothers at an early age. In fact, they may even be preaching against this by encouraging them to pursue higher education or by saying that the majority of them should become “brahmacarinis”.
  • YELLOW: There may be some women in temple management but their presence isn’t very strong. There may be some feminist ideas here and there ( such as female diksa gurus ) but at least early marriage for women is still being preached.
  • GREEN:No women in temple management. Temple leaders are preaching only stri-dharma with no deviations whatsoever.

BA: Bad association

  • GRAY:
    No information available.
  • RED:
Spiritual leaders who are not ISKCON devotees may be visiting the temple AND preaching / giving lectures ( simply “visiting” is not an issue ). Devotees may be actively preaching things like “all paths are equal” and that you can associate with mayavadis and still be called a pure devotee of Krsna.
  • YELLOW: Spiritual leaders who are not ISKCON devotees never give lectures inside the temple, but there’s no preaching about avoiding their association either. Devotees may regularly read the spiritual literature they wrote, either in book form or through other media.
  • GREEN: Association with non-devotees is completely forbidden and devotees keep respectful distance from devotees in other missions and sampradayas. There’s some actual preaching about this, even to guests.

Y: Yoga

  • GRAY:
    No information available.
  • RED:
Yoga is a regular activity inside temple properties. There may be even a room built specifically for this purpose, devotees may be actually running a yoga studio inside the temple. OR Yoga is being performed in front of the Deities.
  • YELLOW: Some yoga classes may happen but not very often. They don’t ever happen in front of the Deities.
  • GREEN: Yoga classes and courses are not happening inside temple properties at all.

DW: Deity Worship

  • GRAY:
    No information available.
  • RED:
People who are not brahmanas are worshipping the Deities. AND/OR Temple pujaris are doing Shiva puja, Ganesha puja, car puja, motorcycle puja, etc..
  • YELLOW:Only people who have second initiation can worship the Deities, but the standards for giving second initiation are loose. “Brahmanas” engaged in Deity worship may be working as somebody’s employee ( the occupation of a sudra ) or may not even be strictly following four regulative principles. Temples in which Deity offenses are regular events also fit into this category ( such as hand clapping to praise other people in front of the Deities, dressing them in improper clothing, or not giving them appropriate amount of daily attention and pujas ).
  • GREEN: Only true brahmanas can worship the Deities and Deity offenses are rare events or they don’t ever happen.

This list is meant to avoid conflict: use it if you want to avoid ending up in places which are incompatible with your spiritual path. If you don’t like something in a program, address your concerns to the temple leader in private; if you’re not satisfied with his answer, and if you think you can’t live up with those deviations, go away and start your own program or join somewhere else. But please try to avoid conflict with devotees whenever possible ( even though sometimes it may be unavoidable ). Recommended reading on this particular point:

‘ Beware of “Time, Place, and Circumstances” ‘ by Bhakti Vikasa Swami

( Lecture )

[45:57] “…We have to be careful to keep our life focused on the goal. It is possible to get diverted in so many ways. Just like wherever I go people tell me: “Did you hear about this or did you hear about that?” It is, you can say, ISKCON-kātha (laughter). In this temple so-and-so is fighting with temple president and in that temple someone stole some money, in this temple this and in that temple that, ay, ay… It is a big organization and if you want to hear all the gossip you can spend all day and all night, but you know what? You won’t become Kṛṣṇa conscious.
So you can become, like, go on the internet and see and see this person said this, and that person said that, and there is a rumor about this…but at the time of death it’s not gonna help you think of Kṛṣṇa. So better to be tuned into a Vaikuṇṭha-kātha. Of course, if there is some problem, we may try to do something, to offset that. But we should know our limits also, and we should know also that it is going to be there to some extent anyway. But that is not the subject matter or should not be a subject matter of our meditation. We can expect in Kalī-yuga that definitely within a spiritual society there will be all kind of things going on, which are influenced by Kalī-yuga, but we should focus that we haven’t come here to make a different gossip club, we are here to serve Kṛṣṇa. So, it is true that in ISKCON there are all kinds of things going on that should not be going on, it is true in every organization, in every Gauḍīya Math also, it was going on while Śrīla Prabhupāda was there also. It is a myth that everything was right while Śrīla Prabhupāda was present, and it will go on. But, what is also going on is chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa, preaching Kṛṣṇa consciousness, discussion of Kṛṣṇa, serving The Lord. So if you like, you may look for the stool. And if you like, you may look for the nectar, which is there.”
